Measured at purchasing power parity, the IMF puts China’s 2026 economy at $43.5 trillion, ahead of America’s $31.8 trillion. At market exchange rates, the same dataset reverses the order: America $31.8 trillion, China $20.65 trillion. Both figures are accurate. Only the second reflects what bond traders and defense ministries pay.
Each chapter takes one widely repeated claim, states it at full strength, then asks what its number was built to measure and who produced it. You learn which statistics describe national power and which describe living standards, hull counts or subsidized paperwork.
China’s navy has more hulls. America’s surface fleet had about 8,400 vertical launch cells, roughly how many missiles it can fire before reloading, against China’s 4,300 at the end of 2024. China leads in patent filings, yet on January 27, 2021, its own patent administration ordered governments to stop subsidizing applications and stop treating filing volume as a performance measure.
The book argues that America still leads on most measures of power. What you keep is four questions for any headline declaring a winner: which measure was used, who produced it, what would falsify it, and what happened the last time someone made the same claim.
